Intrathecal administration of norepinephrine (NE) into the lumbar subarachnoid space of rats
and cats implanted with chronic spinal catheters produced a strong, dose-dependent,
behaviorally defined analgesia. The effect appeared mediated by an α-receptor inasmuch
