Background The pathogenesis of acute cardiac allograft rejection involves cell-mediated
and antibody-mediated immunologic mechanisms of action. The endomyocardial biopsy
(EMB) diagnosis of acute cellular rejection (ACR), using internationally standardized criteria
has served as a therapeutic target and been accepted as an effective surrogate for cardiac
allograft outcomes.
