Compared with resting conditions, during incremental exercise, cardiac output in humans is
elevated from~ 5 to 25 L min− 1. In conjunction with this increase, the proportion of cardiac
output directed toward skeletal muscle increases from~ 20% to 85%, while blood flow to
cardiac muscle increases 500% and blood flow to specific brain structures increases nearly
